Crawford, a stray Golden Retriever found in Belmont County, Ohio, landed in the Belmont County animal shelter. When he was not claimed by his owner, he was scheduled for euthanasia. Marsha Sines, Director of the Eastern Ohio Division of Golden Endings, stepped forward and rescued Crawford.

Crawford was transferred to Delaware County for foster care and was given his new name and Golden Endings I.D. number 96-110.

During the standard health check which each of our Goldens receive, the veterinarian found a tumor approximately half the size of a football in Crawford’s right side. Several veterinarians were consulted concerning this finding. Eventually the tumor was removed during a 2½ operation. The incision extended from his right foreleg to the back of his rib cage from which a full five-pound tumor was removed. Crawford recovered fully from the operation…

While Crawford was under the anesthesia, an x-ray of his hips was taken which revealed that his left hip was in very bad shape and that the right knee needed repair. Correcting these problems required another operation. Golden Endings funds were not sufficient to cover the extraordinary expense.

Therefore, Golden Endings started a special fund to help Golden Retrievers who would probably be euthanized due to their medical conditions. In reference to Crawford, a fund was started in his name – The Crawford Fund. Crawford appeared several times on his own behalf to collect funds for his tumor surgery and most of the funds needed for his hip and knee surgery. Some of those funds were used for another Golden friend undergoing tests for cancer.

You, too, may help Goldens who have special life threatening needs with your donation to The Crawford Fund. The monies are used to cover the expense of extraordinary medical procedures. Golden Endings has already treated many Goldens for heartworms, diabetes and other conditions which, if left unchecked, would be fatal.
